Dimitar Dzhenev

In this interview Georgi MIhov meets you with Dimitar Dzhenev - Editor in Chief of Exporter.BG

How did you get into wine? Is there something that has provoked/motivated you?

In 1994 Pari newspaper gave me the chance to get into the world of wine. At that time I was working as an editor in the Weekend Team, where I had the honour to start up the first wine page in Bulgarian media. When in 1995 I happened to be the only Bulgarian journalist at VINEXPO Bordeaux, where the New World countries appeared for the first time, I felt that wine would be my field for ever.

Is there any particular person that has been your inspiration?

I will never forget that I had the honor to meet people like Stoyan Kindekov and Hristo Dermenzhiev /they have left their great mark on Bulgarian wine industry/, Atanas Babaev /the nose man/ and Rafi Hofsepian. I drew inspiration from them.

Do you have favourite grape variety and why?

My favourite ones are the Bulgarian grape varieties because they carry the distinctive spirit of our land and can always tell you a good story.

What are your expectations regarding wine trends in next 1-2 years in Bulgaria?

I think that in the next 1 – 2 years Bulgarian wineries will bring more modern yet classic wines. I expect remarkable wines to occur from pure Bulgarian grape varieties. I believe they will.

Where do you see “Bulgarian wine” in next 10 years on the world wine map?

. In 10 years most probably we won’t be among the top ten countries in quantities of wine produced although we were in the top five in the world in the past. In any case we will have wines in the top ten that the world will talk about.

If you have to recommend just 1 Bulgarian winery, which would that be and why?

Each Bulgarian winery is my favourite when it surprises me with a wine worthy to compete with the best wines in the world.

What is your everyday wine?

My everyday wine is not a particular grape variety because the emotion is in the difference as a feeling.

What is your dream wine no matter country that you want to try?

No doubt, there are many wines that I would like to try. My dream is rather to participate in a Royal Tasting of the top wines in the world. I know that there is such tasting in Paris, but the registration fee is very high. But we are talking about dreams and wines, aren't we?
